About

I grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, surrounded by the arts and have dabbled in many different mediums. Dance has been my lifelong passion until I got my hands back into clay about five years ago, and since then pottery has become my main artistic expression.

I graduated with degrees in Philosophy and Education (Universidad de Buenos Aires) and studied Creative Therapy at the HAN University in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. I have worked as a Spanish as a Second Language teacher, Argentinean tango instructor, and dance therapist in Argentina, the Netherlands, Bolivia, and in Canada, where I have lived in Ottawa for the past 20 years. Here, I made my first steps as a ceramist in several local pottery studios, as well as in the Ottawa School of Art with Nadine Argo.

Fascinated by hand built ceramic sculptures, I have deepened my experience at my sister Teresa Abbate’s art studio in Lago Puelo, Argentinean Patagonia and in Casa de la Cultura in Oaxaca, Mexico. The Argentinian ceramist Pablo Ruiz taught me how to create my own glazes and inspired me to produce a corpus of ceramic sculptures in his studio Gente de Barro in Buenos Aires and also online, and he inspired me to set up my own studio in Ottawa. Also, I took the course Pre Columbian Ceramics with Paula Ferrante in the Museo José Hernandez de Buenos Aires. More recently, I learned more about shape and volume and took my first steps in terras sigillatas from the Spanish master Miguel Molet. Currently, I attend Debora Pierpaoli studio in Buenos Aires.

When I work in my studio, the clay malleability and tactility make a joyful connection between my inner and outer space. I follow the flow of my internal life and also honor the clay´s own calling. I let my pieces happen by playing with gravity, plasticity, geometric shapes and textures that I mostly create with natural or intervened natural elements. Working with clay is a playful reflection on the organic in nature and on human nature.

I like to see my ceramic pieces as an invitation to just enjoy by taking a moment to discover edges, strength and softness, as if letting you slide on their extensions or be contained in the cavities, simply.
